About Us
Our Story
At Guido’s, we’re more than just a hair salon—we’re a cherished Teesside institution woven into the fabric of Middlesbrough life. Since opening our first salon on Russell Street in 1961, our mission has remained simple: craft outstanding hair while building lasting relationships.
Our Story
Founded by Italian-born hairdresser Guido Battista, the original salon quickly became synonymous with modern flair and bold styles, at a time when traditional barbers only offered short back and sides. In the 1970s, Guido expanded—acquiring a former sweet shop on Princes Road and opening a dedicated ladies’ salon across the street. Today, both salons thrive under his guidance and the passionate stewardship of his children, Mauro and Nicola.
Family at the Heart
Guido’s is a family business through and through. While Mauro leads the men’s salon and Nicola runs the ladies’ salon, Guido himself is still cutting hair—more than 60 years after opening—and shows no signs of slowing down. Mauro reflects, “I don’t think he’ll ever retire… it doesn’t feel like work to Dad because he’s doing a job he loves.”
Our clients are like extended family—some have been with us for decades, and we’ve seen generations pass through our chairs. A much-loved relic in the salon is the child’s haircutting chair shaped like a horse, dating back to our earliest days, still delighting children today.
Tradition Meets Innovation
While Guido laid the foundation, Mauro and Nicola ensure Guido’s remains at the forefront of hairdressing. They continuously invest in training—attending top academies like Vidal Sassoon and Tigi Academy—and use premium brands such as TIGI and GHD. This unwavering commitment to quality and relevance helped bring iconic styles to local figures, including the bleached blonde wedge popular among Boro players like Tony Mowbray and Alan Kernaghan’s perm.
Community & Connection
More than a salon, Guido’s is a social hub. Guido has always placed people first—engaging warmly with customers and staff, checking in on them, and nurturing long-term relationships. Many clients return weekly or fortnightly, some for 40 to 50 years.
Despite industry challenges—including closures during recent lockdowns—Guido’s has persevered, with the cherished support of our loyal community and a team of 17 dedicated employees across both salons.
